We are making one final push to invite students to apply for The Experiment in International Living. The expectations for essays are as follows:

The Experiment will look for essays that are thoughtful and well written and that fully answer one of the following prompts in 300 to 500 words:

  1. What do you think will be the most challenging part of The Experiment? How will you overcome these challenges? In which areas do you expect to grow as an individual?
  2. The Experiment requires you to work closely with the same group of people for a long period of time. Describe a time when you were part of a group (e.g., a sports team, club, or summer camp). Try to predict what role you might take in an Experiment group. What do you need to be successful in a group environment for an extended period of time (e.g., do you need alone time, emotional support, words of encouragement, etc.)?
  3. During The Experiment, you’ll be immersed in a culture unlike your own. Think of a time when you were confronted with a different culture in your home community, another part of the US, or abroad. How did that experience impact you? What did you learn from it?

Gavin Willis, along with a friend from the EIL program, created a video that can be viewed on YouTube.  Click here to see or share it:  https://youtu.be/5bv9S8V1eHI

OCTOBER 12TH EMERGENCY MEETING:

THE KWHS INTERNATIONAL CLUB JOINS FORCES WITH ONE WORLD ONE CANVAS

TO SUPPORT HURRICANE VICTIMS IN HAITI!

Most of you have likely seen the devastation that has occurred in the Caribbean due to Hurricane Matthew. What you may or may not know is that many of our Monroe County students and their families have friends or family that were impacted.

Local KWHS art teacher Shannon Perkins is the Founder and President of One World One Canvas. The KWHS International Club is happy to support her and her team! Read below to see how you can help! Pastor Chery (in Leogane, Haiti) and Pastor Ebenson Michelin (Key West) have discovered what the survivors need most, in the after math of Hurricane Matthew. They need: food, chlorine tablets, mosquito netting and disposable diapers. Here are two ways YOU can help: 1. Purchase one or more of the following items. Drop them off or mail them to One World One Canvas, 1077 Hawksbill Lane, Sugarloaf Key, FL 33042 or drop them off to Gavin Willis at Key West High school and he will get them to Mrs. Perkins. We are collecting through the month of October. Please include your name, email and address with the donation so we can thank you. • Chlorine tablets - to purify drinking water. Our goal is 1000 tablets. • Mosquito netting – to construct above beds and sitting places. Our goal is 300 8x8’ sheets • Disposable diapers - all sizes. Our goal is 2,000 diapers. If you are placing your orders on Amazon.com, please type Smile.Amazon.com and select One World One Canvas as your charity of choice. Then you will make an even greater impact. Or paste the following link in your browser to sign up for smile.amazon/OWOC:https://smile.amazon.com/ch/47-2524988 2. Make out a check or donate cash  payable to One World One Canvas. (note: 100% will go to the needy). Drop off or mail monetary donations to: One World One Canvas, 1077 Hawksbill Lane, Sugarloaf Key, FL 33042. 2015- 2016 School Year Notes Below

10/7/15- As a member of the International club since 9th grade, I was extremely disappointed that we lost our sponsor and the club was discontinued by the school. So something had to be done! I decided to advocate to  the administration and bring the club back. The first organizational meeting was small but without Mrs. Fox, we couldn't have done it. We developed a mission and goals. We are in the process of getting a petition signed and advertising the "new" and improved club.

Meeting 2 was a success. We developed a plan with Mrs. Fox and learned that we have approval from the school. We are now an Official Club, again! This meeting was a strategic meeting to develop a member recruitment plan and we will hold elections at the next meeting.

Come join the KWHS International club out at the Bahama Village Goombay Festival to Celebrate Bahamian Food and culture!

We will be here and hope you can join us!

12/2/2015- We had a huge club turn out. There were 26 people that joined the club this week and the elections went smoothly. I, was named President, Chase is now the Vice President and Darren was selected at Secretary. We need  to wait until next month when Mrs. Sheer returns from maternity leave to select a treasurer and complete the money collection paperwork. I also had an opportunity to bring in and talk about EIL and  the upcoming trip and essay contest. Next month will feature an ethic food sharing luncheon. Tibetan monks will be in Key West and we are hoping we can get them to visit the club to learn more about their mission.

International Club Meeting Minutes 2016

1/6/ 2016- The first meeting of the 2016 new year was successful. Several people brought food from their culture for the club to share. I, Gavin,  brought humus and pita bread and explained that it was a very popular food in Turkey where is family is from. TJ share perogies and talked about his Russian heritage. Darren brought a cucumber salad which is popular in India. After the treats Gavin talked about his recent EIL trip to China and shared photos. Then I provided information about an upcoming EIL essay contest where Key West High School students can win a free trip overseas this summer. I handed out program information. After that, the club discussed a need for a treasurer and brainstormed ways to fundraiser to support the club and local ethnic groups or charities in need. Group members will brainstorm places to donate the money to and will vote at the next meeting. Some ideas suggested were: bake sale, change/ penny drive, garage sale, and candy sale. I will locate a guest speaker at the next meeting to share information about their culture. I plan to reach out to an Middle Eastern-Islamic group in Key West to share information about their cultures and dispell myths.Several students volunteered to bring ethnic food to the next meeting.

1/29/16- President Update

Did you know that children in Uganda suffer from jiggers? What are jiggers? Jiggers are parasitic sand fleas that digs into feet, lays eggs and causes painful wounds that lead to infection. Jiggers  are so painful that children are unable to walk, attend school or even play. In fact the infection may even lead to gangrene or even death!

The good news is that we can help! We can gather jeans and help cut them into shapes using a pattern. Then Sole Hope, a non-profit organization. will make shoes for the children of Uganda using our cut jeans.

We are excited to announce that we will partner with Sugarloaf School's student council to send our jeans off together. International club students are also invited to attend both the International Club shoe cutting party on March 2nd, and the Sugarloaf School Students Council shoe cutting party. Once the date is announced I will post it on this site.

Please start gathering up your unwanted jeans and scissors. You can drop them off in Mrs. Fox's classroom. She will hold them until the shoe cutting party on March 2nd .

Thank you for supporting the international club and the children of Uganda!

Gavin Willis- President

This Winston Dowell Academy video does a great job explaining how the process works and why making shoes for the children of Uganda is so important. Check it out!

Wednesday March 2nd 2016-  Our first shoe cutting party was a success! Thank you everyone that participated in cutting out the soles for the shoes! Tomorrow we will be at Sugarloaf School to help the National Honor Society students cut out their soles! Spreading the love!

Check out some of the photos below.

On Thursday March 3rd 2016 , the Key West High School International Club joined up with Mrs. Vazquez and the Sugarloaf Middle School Student Council to cut out shoes for the SOLE HOPE initiative. Together they cut out over 70 shoes for the children of Uganda! It was a tremendous success. Mrs. Vazquez will be sending the shoes off so they can be sewn, finished and given to children.

Check out the photos from the collaboration below!
